Earlier this week, Bandai Namco announced that they were developing a new game based on Yoichi Takahashi's popular
Captain Tsubasa football series; a series, however, not too well known outside of Japan. Unsurprisingly enough, Captain Tsubasa is very popular in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.
In fact, and because the series isn't popular in North America, Bandai Namco almost didn't localise
Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, but they ended up deciding to do it because it is actually a fun game regardless of the series' popularity.
According to Bandai Namco director of brand marketing Dennis Lee, when they "
evaluated the game, we realized that it was a really fun game. So even if they don't know Tsubasa and the characters, soccer fans and fans of arcade-style sports games can have a really good time playing it. Because of that, we decided that we couldn't just release it in Latin America."
Captain Tsubasa may be about football, but the series is actually very over the top and dramatic, which is a trait that has been kept over the years, and has now been taken to the next level; making it almost look like an episode straight out of
Dragon Ball Z, and the game has managed to capture that perfectly. Hopefully North American audiences will enjoy the game, and get a chance to check out the series, too.
