In recent years, single-player games have seemingly began to disappear as some players seem to prefer games that provide a full online experience.
Santa Monica Studios'
God of War(2018) has proven that single-player games are alive and kicking, delivering a proper single-player experience with a fantastic story, charismatic characters, and tight controls; not to mention its amazing photorealistic graphics.
The same was said about Naughty Dog's
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End when it released back in 2016, which ended the 10-year-old franchise on a very high note. Both
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and
God of War(2018) have proven that there is still a lot of room for franchises to learn from the past and provide even better experiences with every future entry.
God of War(2005) director, David Jaffe, doesn't think that Naughty Dog's
Uncharted series has done a good job reinventing itself over the years and has posted a video comparing
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. He even goes as far as saying that titles like these are responsible for AAA games to be dying. He mainly believes that the problem isn't really how AAA games are programmed(since he actually does praise the development teams in general), but the fact that these games don't innovate any more; which is the main reason why he has given up on AAA games almost altogether.
Jaffe sees the lack of innovation in AAA games as a problem with the industry and not with Naughty Dog's
Uncharted series, as he cannot stress enough that Naughty Dog's execution is second to none when it comes to developing games, and to be fair he does have a point since in his opinion these games lack innovation; the problem is that he may be confusing innovation with consistency, since
Uncharted games' main sin is to push those climbing sections on players, which cane become a little repetitive.
Besides from that,
Uncharted games have always introduced new concepts that make the experience a lot better for players, and Jaffe's comparison is done by showing us footage, not by playing the games. Going back to the first
Uncharted after playing any of its sequels will make the original game feel clunky; meaning that something has definitely changed over the years.
