Movie director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who is currently working the
Metal Gear Solid movie, recently spoke with IGN and shared some very interesting details regarding
The Legend of Zelda and how he would approach making a movie adaptation of Nintendo's critically acclaimed series.
The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's series that would work best in movie form, but it is also one of the most difficult to adapt without alienating some of its fanbase. The reason for this is that some people may want a live action movie, others an animated film, and some other maybe even want it to be a TV show—and no, we don't mean that hideous, and yet charming show from the 90s.
On the movie's tone, according to Vogt-Roberts, he thinks is best to make it as "
Zelda" as possible by not going too Hollywood on it and actually staying faithful to the source.
"
The thing about Zelda is Zelda is not Lord of the Rings, right? You cannot forget how quirky and bizarre Zelda is. I think you need to find a way to actually fuse the traditional Zelda and the very new Zelda", said Vogt-Roberts. And he is right, adapting
Zelda and making it into a
The Lord of the Rings type of movie would differ way too much from the source. Nintendo has already made that mistake in the past with the
Super Mario Bros. movie adaptation—and we all know how that went.
When talking about the tone his The Legend of Zelda movie would have, he thinks it's best to establish a balance that agrees with the series as a whole—taking ideas from not one, but several titles in the series.
"I think you have to find a way to very intensely fuse the pure just sort of fantasy of The Ocarina of Time and The Link to the Past, but then I think you need to find a way to incorporate the newer pseudo-tech stuff -- you know, the lasers and Tron lines that happen in the newer games, but in a way that’s not overwhelming".
One of The Legend of Zelda's most controversial topics amongst fans is Link being a mute. The main character in the series is far from mute, the thing about it is that—due to technical limitations in the past—he simpy didn't speak. Then when technology allowed for characters to speak in games, Nintendo decided not to make him talk—providing players with the dialogue Link should use when interacting with other characters.
In Breath of the Wild, Nintendo finally made the decision to have actors voicing the characters...except for Link, who remains silent throughout the entirety of the game—although Nintendo managed to give somewhat of an in-game explanation to that.
On Link being a mute, Jordan Vogt-Roberts was very brief but straight to the point, saying that "I actually fully think Link should not speak the entire film. I would do a film where he’s a silent protagonist", which is probably what could win a lot of fans over if he was to ever direct a The Legend of Zelda movie.
