Playtonic has had a lot of success with
Yooka-Laylee, their spiritual successor to the
Banjo-Kazooie series, with the first game releasing in April of last year, and
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair relasing just a couple of weeks ago; both getting praise from critics and players alike.
With the first game, Playtonic went for a 3D adventure gameplay similar to that one seen in the
Banjo-Kazooie series, but for the sequel —
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair — they actually did something different and took inspiration from the new
Donkey Kong Country series of 2D platformers developed by Retro Studios.
Now that Playtonic have successfully made both a 3D adventure game and 2D platformer, one could wonder what genre could they tackle next. Thankfully, that question now has an answer, as new interview with the developers makes its way online.
In a recent interview with
3DJuegos, Playtonic developers Mark Stevenson and Steve Mayles have recently revealed that they could technically "work on any kind of game"; hinting that a racer or even a shooter is not off the table at Playtonic.
"
I think we'll keep working on Yooka Laylee in the future. Really, we could work on any kind of game, a racing game like Mario Kart or a shooter like Splatoon," revealed Stevenson.
Stevenson then goes on to explain that they never really intended to make Yooka and Laylee the only characters to be the protagonists of their games, revealing that they could even have ideas for some spin-off titles.
"
We've never intended Yooka and Laylee to be the protagonists of all of our games. On the future, we could make a spin-off with one of the many characters from Yooka Laylee, like Dr. Quack or Dr. Puzz. Being independent lets us follow whatever way we want and the one we think is right."
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is currently available for home consoles and PC, and the game has actually been getting overwhelmingly positive reviews. If Playtonic sets out to develop a new title — be it a racer or a shooter — one thing is for sure: their fans will be there to purchase that game on day one.
