Sony Addresses The Cross-Play Issue Once Again and It Seems They Are Considering A Solution

Sony has been getting a lot of criticism over locking Epic Games' Fortnite accounts without any notice, thus preventing players to access their accounts on other platforms. Today, they address this issue again.

During this past E3, Fortnite was finally announced for the Nintendo Switch, releasing on the very same day of its announcement. To the surprise of many players, who had previously played Fortnite on their PlayStation 4, they realised they couldn't log in to their Epic Accounts on the Nintendo Switch.

The reason for users not being able to access their Epic Games accounts was because Sony does not really allow for cross-play on their console, thus making thousands of players lose all of their ranks and cosmetics if they want to start playing the game on a different platform.

A couple of days after the whole "locked accounts incident", Sony addressed the cross-play issue by simply saying that they do support cross-play gaming when it comes to iOS, PC, Mac, and Android. Long story short: Sony are willing to support cross-play as long as it isn't on a competing home console—which didn't bode well with players.

Today, Sony have addressed the whole cross-play situation, once again, and have given a more reasonable reply that may hint that they are considering cross-platform play. The news comes from Eurogamer, via IGN, who sat down with Sony executive Shawn Layden and asked him about the cross-play issue with Fortnite and about Sony not listening to fans. Layden was adamant about them hearing all the complains by saying that they are looking at a lot of possibilities.

"You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business", said Layden.

This does seem more like a more sincere statement, especially since last time they sounded like they were just trying to save face. While they are opening up a little bit more to the whole topic, this is still a course correction due to damage control. No matter the case, this will hopefully put an end to the whole cross-play issue and Fortnite players—as well as other games affected by the cross-play issue— will finally be able to access their accounts and play with their friends who game on other consoles.
