Bethesda is celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls series, and in doing so they offered a very brief update on The Elder Scrolls VI as well as other exciting projects.
They reminded everyone that there's the new mobile game, The Elder Scrolls: Castles, currently in soft-launch in several countries. "It's a unique take on a castle builder where you control your own dynasty," Bethesda detailed. There's also the latest version of Creations in Skyrim.
But the update many of us were waiting for came at the very end of the post.
"Last but not least, yes, we are in development on the next chapter - The Elder Scrolls VI. Even now, returning to Tamriel and playing early builds has us filled with the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure," the studio said.
It's not the most exciting update, unfortunately. But at least it's something!
The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced back in 2018 though Bethesda hasn't really talked much about the game in the years since. That's because Bethesda's was more focused mostly on the studio's most recent game, Starfield, which launched in September of last year. Although Starfield will be receiving DLC, Bethesda is now turning its attention towards The Elder Scrolls VI.
Unfortunately, it still may be quite a while until we see or hear of anything substantial about the game. Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, previously acknowledged that The Elder Scrolls VI may have been revealed too early and if he could it again, he "probably would've announced it more casually."
Although Bethesda hasn't talked about a release date for The Elder Scrolls VI, Xbox's Phil Spencer revealed during the Microsoft FTC trial last year that the game is still "five plus years away."
"It’s difficult for us right now to nail down," he added.
Five years from now would mean a release window around 2028. If that's the case, it's possible that The Elder Scrolls VI may not even be launching on this current generation of consoles.
Speaking of consoles, that will be a major topic of conversation for The Elder Scrolls VI. Microsoft acquired Bethesda back in 2021, effectively putting all of the company's games under the Xbox banner. As such, Starfield was released only on PC and Xbox, skipping PlayStation entirely. It's quite possible that Microsoft could make The Elder Scrolls VI an Xbox exclusive as well. However, it's also worth mentioning that Microsoft/Xbox has been exploring the possibility of bringing its first-party games to competitive console brands, so maybe The Elder Scrolls VI will come to PlayStation.
