One would think that after the
Diablo: Immortal debacle Blizzard would rethink their approach to their biggest brands, but it looks like this mobile train is not stopping anytime soon. While
Diablo Immortal is clearly influence by many
Diablo rip-offs that make a ton of money in China, Blizzard has reportedly decided to take a look at
Pokémon Go and is using that game's mechanics to build a new
WarCraft.
Blizzard has officially announced that
WarCraft 4 is not happening anytime soon, but as the company is instead working on a "
Warcraft version of Pokémon Go, which is in development for smartphones now. Surely it occurred to the decision-makers at Blizzard that this Warcraft spinoff could be a massive revenue generator, but the game is also in production because lead designer Cory Stockton (formerly of World of Warcraft) is a huge fan of Pokémon," as pointed out by Kotaku's Jason Schreier.
According to Schreier, the mobile version of
WarCraft is working right now and people who have played it say it’s also got a lot more to it than
Pokémon Go, including some single-player mechanics. Unfortunately, that's all we’ve got for now, but the premise of
Pokémon Go-ish adventures set in the
Warcraft universe sounds better than whatever
Diablo Immortal is actually trying to be. Last but not least, let's not forget that players will also have a chance to check out
WarCraft III: Reforged next year.
Warcraft III: Reforged is a stunning reimagining of the revolutionary real-time strategy game that laid the foundation for Azeroth’s most epic stories. Veterans and newcomers alike will experience these pivotal events in Azeroth’s history like never before.
Warcraft III: Reforged is coming in 2019.
