How Classic+ Raids Could Become The Best Part Of World of Warcraft’s Next Chapter

Classic+ has massive potential for new raids that build on unfinished Vanilla lore. From Gilneas and Grim Batol to Naga strongholds and Scarlet Crusade content, here’s why raiding could thrive.

Raiding has always been one of the strongest pillars of World of Warcraft. The original Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Ahn’Qiraj, and Naxxramas created memories that still define the game for many players. If Blizzard moves forward with Classic+, the opportunity to build new raids inside the Vanilla world may be the single biggest chance to make the version feel truly special.

The original game left dozens of story threads, mysterious locations, and faction conflicts unresolved. Many of those loose ends sit in zones that already have atmosphere, existing enemies, and environmental storytelling. Classic+ does not need to invent entirely new continents to deliver memorable raids. It can dig into what was already left half-finished.

One strong example is the Scythe of Elune storyline that runs through Ashenvale and Duskwood. The chain introduces the Worgen threat and ends without a real payoff in Vanilla. A raid that follows the Scythe to Archmage Arugal and into Gilneas would tie together existing lore while giving players a new legendary-level weapon and a fresh zone to explore in a raid setting. It would feel like a natural extension rather than a forced addition.

Un’Goro Crater is another location that has always felt like it is hiding something. Later expansions confirmed Titan facilities and experimental creations there. A Classic+ raid could lean into that idea with halls full of failed Titan constructs, mutated creatures, and environmental hazards that match the crater’s prehistoric tone. Because the zone already feels isolated and strange, a self-contained raid would fit the landscape perfectly.

Timbermaw Hold is one of the strangest underused spaces in the game. The tunnels connect multiple zones and even have an entrance in Ashenvale, yet players only ever experience a tiny portion of them. Opening the deeper Hold as a raid, perhaps corrupted by fel or sealed away for dangerous reasons, would turn a reputation grind location into a proper destination. It would also give Ashenvale more high-level relevance, something the zone has always needed.

Azshara already contains a submerged instance portal that many players noticed even in the original game. A Naga-themed raid based there has been one of the most requested ideas for years. Keeping most of the encounter on land while possibly including a single underwater boss would avoid the movement problems that have plagued underwater content in the past. The Naga are already a consistent presence across multiple zones, so elevating them into a full raid tier would feel earned.

The Syndicate offers a different kind of opportunity. Most Vanilla raids target obvious world-ending threats or highly visible villains. The Syndicate operates in the shadows through banditry and political remnants of Alterac. A raid focused on their operations in Stromgarde or hidden bases in the Alterac Mountains could emphasize traps, stealth, and infiltration rather than pure boss-rush encounters. That variety would be welcome in a Classic+ environment that wants to feel distinct from modern raid design.

Season of Discovery already tested Scarlet Crusade content with the Scarlet Enclave. That work does not need to be thrown away. A tuned-down version could return as a level-up raid or a carefully balanced end-game option. The Scarlet Crusade has the aesthetic, the fanaticism, and the existing infrastructure to support a full raid without requiring brand-new worldbuilding.

Grim Batol sits in the Wetlands as little more than a sealed door for most players. Its history as a Wildhammer stronghold, Dragonmaw base, and prison for Alexstrasza gives it enormous narrative weight. A raid that finally opens those gates could involve remaining Dragonmaw forces, elemental corruption, or darker experiments left behind. Few locations in Vanilla carry that much unused lore density.

Even Karazhan and the sealed city of Dalaran represent massive opportunities. Both were clearly intended for more content during original development. Bringing either into Classic+ as a raid would satisfy long-standing curiosity while staying firmly inside the Vanilla map and power level.

What makes these ideas compelling is how little they rely on importing later expansion concepts. They work because the original game already planted the seeds. Classic+ can water those seeds instead of starting over. Raids that grow out of existing quests, environmental details, and unresolved conflicts will feel more authentic than completely new threats dropped into the world.

The best Classic+ raids would also respect the pacing and philosophy of original Vanilla raiding. That means fewer mandatory intercept mechanics, more emphasis on spatial awareness and coordination, and loot that feels powerful within the existing itemization framework. New raids should expand the world rather than power-creep the players out of it.

Variety will matter. A mix of faction-focused raids, environmental dungeons, and lore payoffs would keep the experience from becoming repetitive. Some raids can be sprawling and narrative-heavy. Others can be tighter, more mechanical, or focused on a single memorable location. The original game already demonstrated that different raid styles can coexist.

If Classic+ delivers even a portion of these possibilities, raiding could once again become the main reason many players log in. The original Vanilla raids succeeded because they felt like true expeditions into dangerous, half-understood places. Classic+ has the chance to recreate that feeling with locations players have stared at for twenty years and never been allowed to fully enter.

The potential is already sitting in the game files, the quest text, and the geography of Azeroth. All that remains is for Blizzard to open the doors. What raids would you like to see in Classic+?
