Everybody has wanted to be a pirate at some point in their lives, and thanks to the outlet of video games, that dream has become even closer to a reality with the release of Kalypso Media and Gaming Minds Studio' Port Royale 4. Bringing the trading that took place in the 17th century to life, the game brings the pros and cons of being a town governor during that period in history.

From a premise standpoint, the game offers a lot in terms of simulation and full immersion, from being able to hire captains and build ship convoys to helping grow your town and the relationships with different islands; hefty doesn't even begin to describe her amount of mechanics found in the game. That being said, from tutorial to campaign, if you're a player that enjoys the high energy that comes from most modern video games, this may not be the one for you. The tutorial can be considered wordy, and there is a lot of information to become familiar with to maximize entertainment.

The combat in the game is a turn-based naval battle that pits your convoy against an enemy's team of ships. This is where upgrading plays a key role because while this aspect was easily a highlight, it can be unforgiving if your ship is ill-prepared (I died in the tutorial!).

Visually the game is stunning, even with a bird's eye view perspective, players can zoom far into the islands and far enough out to plot trade routes. The beauty of the Caribbean is in full effect; however, once you realize that you could be staring at the same thing for quite some time, it could feel a bit stale. We would love to hear some of your tales about the game in the comments below!

Port Royale 4 is a great game for those who enjoy games that take their time and rely on attention to detail over spectacle. The combat is responsive and fun but very difficult if not properly prepared. Visually the game has a lot to offer, but players may find the same view tiresome after a while. All in all, for a relaxing and strategic gaming experience, this may be the one for you!

Port Royale 4: 5.5/10

Set sail and join the colonial powers of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands in their fight for supremacy of the Caribbean in the 17th century. In ‘Port Royale 4’ you will take control of a colony as a young and ambitious governor who is eager to learn what it takes to manage and grow his small settlement into a bustling trader city.

Port Royale 4 is available now for the PS4 and PC!
