The new
God of War has one of the best opening sequences in the franchise, and it is definitely a great one in video game history, as well. This is all thanks to that great fight with
The Stranger that simply came out of nowhere. Things take a turn for the worse, especially because this strange person doesn't look like someone who could take on Kratos, and it was quite the surprise when he actually lands that punch on the
God of War himself.
In this second episode of the
God of War Director's Commentary series, Cory Barlog tells us about the fight with the Stranger, how he ended up casting the voice actor for the role, and some other interesting details.
Barlog mentions that casting the role of
The Stranger was very difficult but they ended up getting Jeremy Davies(
Saving Private Ryan,
LOST) who even came up with some ideas for the character and Barlog immediately knew he was the right guy for the role.
Another interesting detail that he shares is that
The Stranger fight was intentionally done in the way that it was so that players realised that this time boss fights were not necessarily going to be against huge, and powerful monsters, and that's exatly what makes the fight so good, because of how unexpected it is.
That's exactly what
God of War is, a series of unexpected events that keeps surprising players as the story unfolds. The game has definitely lived up to the expectations from fans, and if you haven't played it yet, go and do yourself a favour by picking it up. You won't be disappointed.
His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive…And teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series—satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative—and fuses them anew.
God of War is available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
