At E3 this year, it was revealed that the first installment of Square Enix's
Final Fantasy VII Remake will release next year on March 3, 2020.
The game has currently only been announced for PlayStation 4, but given its release date and how soon we're expected to get next-gen systems (Sony has already talked about its next-gen PlayStation), it's not unreasonable to think it could also arrive on the PS5 — or whatever Sony chooses to call its next console. At the very least, it seems almost inevitable that future episodes in the remake will release on the next PlayStation.
Square Enix president and CEO, Yosuke Matsuda, was asked about
Final Fantasy VII Remake being split between console generations, or if the first installment will also release on next-gen consoles.
"It's the hottest topic at the moment and we thought you might ask us that," Matsuda told GameInformer.
"I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles. I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I'm not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles."
Matsuda's comment doesn't confirm that
Final Fantasy VII Remake will release on next-gen systems, but it seems almos inevitable that at least future installments will. If the upcoming first installment does make its way to next-gen systems, the question then becomes if it will be backwards compatible or if we'll have to buy an entirely new copy.
