The current generation of consoles has been going on for just over five years now - beginning in November of 2013. Many reports, rumours, and leaks seem to confirm that the next generation is indeed forthcoming. Particularly regarding PlayStation and Xbox, as Nintendo has made it clear that they intend to break from the traditional cycle and keep the Switch alive for years to come.
Now we have another seeming inkling as to when the next generation will arrive thanks to the CFO of GameStop. According to a new report by
GameSpot; during a recent earning's call, the retailer shared with analysts that they expect a slow-down in hardware sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as the public are informed of the next generation.
"With respect to new hardware, as we get closer to the end of the current console cycle for Xbox and PlayStation, we expect demand to decline as some customers choose to wait on the sidelines in anticipation of acquiring the next generation of innovative consoles," Rob Lloyd was quoted as saying.
Apparently, Lloyd was referring to the year of 2019 whilst talking to these analysts. This suggests that the coming generation may well be announced or even released this year. However, with Sony sitting out of 2019's E3 convention and the many other reports that the next generation will arrive next year rather than this year; 2020 still seems like the safest bet as to when we'll be seeing the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
