Adam Lawson is a multi-talented director, producer, writer, and comic book creator who has been involved in all sides of the business. From creating movies such as Game Therapy to directing shows for Geek and Sundry like TableTop and Arcade Arms, to his wildly successful Youtube series Escape The Night, not to mention his experience with music videos for artists like Gym Class Heroes and Sick Puppies.
Currently the creator has turned his attention to a new kind of project, his very own comic book series. The book is called The Eighth, and it follows a boy who finds symbiotic Sumerian armor that is controlled using Mathematics.
The Eighth is currently over the halfway mark for its Indiegogo campaign and is headed for a successful future. In support of the series we spoke with Lawson about his new book. While we had him, we took the chance to ask about his multiple Geek and Sundry shows.
Take a look at the information we learned about the Magic: The Gathering based television show, Geek and Sundry's Spellslingers, below. We have included images for The Eighth so that fans can preview the art of the new adventure while learning about Spellslingers along the way.
Joe: What is your contribution to Spellslingers?
Adam Lawson: I direct Spellslingers. Geek and Sundry said that Magic wanted them to do a show and they asked if I would direct it. So I came in season two, I was tied up on another project so I recommended a friend for season one and I came in through season six. And we had a great run with it and I had great executives.
Joe: Were you a fan of Magic: The Gathering before working on the series?
Adam Lawson: Yes! And what’s interesting about that call is that I had a good friend Sheri Bryant who was producing Geek and Sundry. And so that’s how I got involved in TableTop and then I swung over to Spellslingers.
And all three of those things have been a core part of my childhood and now it's so much a part of my work. And I’ve done tons of work with Dungeons and Dragons, I directed their show ForceGrey. It’s interesting how that circles back.
It’s interesting because Joe Manganello (Magic Mike, True Blood) came in and all he wants to play is Dungeons and Dragons. He says that Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) got him statues and he said he realizes that all he wants to be doing as an adult is playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Joe: Can you share any interesting trivia about Spellslingers for fans?
Adam Lawson: We did another bit with Joseph Gordon Levitt (500 Days of Summer, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) who is another famous nerd. He played Magic: The Gathering hardcore as a kid and we did a special with him.
I got in touch with him through one of the producers on the show. He said he wanted to bring the Magic: The Gathering cards from inside his closet that he hadn’t looked at in ten years. So I called Magic: The Gathering and they were on board.
So it was kind of amazing because he brought his backpack and set his cards on the table. And when he opened up the folder, inside on the first page was a Mox, which is one of the most rare and valuable cards in Magic: The Gathering. And he reaches for his character sheet excited to find it, ignoring the extremely rare card. And we couldn’t believe this moment that he’s got this unsleeved deck of all these rare cards that he’s just shuffling.
