Get ready for more animated anthology stories about your favorite video games to be told. Following the release of the latest batch of episodes, Prime Video has announced that Secret Level has been renewed for a second season.
Secret Level, which debuted last week on the streaming service with eight episodes, reportedly became the most-watched animated series debut of all time for Prime Video. The exact numbers were not revealed, but according to Variety, the series was watched for 155.3 million minutes in the United States during its first week of availability. Season 1's remaining seven episodes were released on Monday, December 16th.
From the creators of Love, Death + Robots, Prime Video's Secret Level is a "celebration of games and gamers." The first season is comprised of 15 episodes based on some of the most beloved video game franchises, including PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Armored Core, Warhammer 40,000, Unreal Tournament, and more.
"Each episode of Secret Level serves as a gateway to a new adventure, unlocking exciting worlds from beloved gaming classics and highly anticipated new titles. Prepare for an unforgettable journey, where Amazon MGM Studios and gaming’s finest unite in a first-of-its-kind event that brings together more game IP in a single series than has ever been done before," the series description reads.
The series also boasts a star-studded cast including Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator Franchise), Kevin Hart (Jumanji), Keanu Reeves (John Wick), Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett, Chief of War), Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Heaven Hart, Emily Swallow (The Mandalorian), Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us, Terminator: Dark Fate), Ricky Whittle (American Gods, Land of Bad), Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus), Merle Dandridge (The Last of Us), Claudia Doumit (The Boys), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost, The Union), Clive Standen (Vikings, The Morning Show), Laura Bailey (The Legend of Vox Machina), and Michael Beach (The Perfect Couple, Tulsa King).
While not perfect, Secret Level has been met with generally positive reviews. Season 1 currently sits at a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics writing: "Secret Level's melange of video game shorts can't help but feel like a glorified sizzle reel, but these vignettes pack a mean punch in small doses."
It's been much more embraced by general audiences; however, with a solid 83% on the Popcornmeter.
