Peacock dropped the first teaser for its upcoming Twisted Metal series, giving fans a taste of what to expect from live-action television adaption of the beloved PlayStation franchise.
The teaser is incredibly short -- checking in at just over a minute in length, most of which is spent on a gag joke. However, we do get a great look at Sweet Tooth, the in insane killer clown who drives an ice cream truck.
The teaser begins with Anthony Mackie in his car, loading his weapons in preparation for his road trip across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. After loading his weapon, he pops in a CD -- yes, it appears we're in the old-school 90s (unless he's just an old-school kinda guy) -- and much to our surprise it's not one of the iconic tracks from games. Rather than hearing Rob Zombie's "Dragula" or "Superbeast," which instantly would've won over fans of the video games, we get Lens' "Steal My Sunshine" as a joke.
It kind of makes sense because Peacock's Twisted Metal is described as a "high-octane action comedy." And while the games were kind of dark in nature, this is an original take on the PlayStation franchise. The series is based on the popular PlayStation video games, not necessarily a direct adaptation of the story.
In fact, rather than participating in a vehicular combat tournament, Anthony Mackie's "motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland."
"With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck," the synopsis teases.
Of course, that deranged clown driving the ice cream truck is none other than Sweet Tooth, the face of the Twisted Metal games. Sweet Tooth will be played by Samoa Joe on screen but voiced by Will Arnett. The cast also includes Stephanie Beatriz as Quiet, Thomas Haden Church as Agent Stone, and Richard Cabral as Loudy. The series also features guest stars Neve Campbell, Mike Mitchell, Tahj Vaughans, Chloe Fineman and Lou Beatty Jr. It's unclear which other characters from the game will make the leap to television, but it should be exciting as we get closer to the show's release.
Twisted Metal is set to arrive on Peacock on July 27th. The series will consist of 10, half-hour episodes.
