Alicia Vikander Talks More About Her New Take On Lara Croft In The TOMB RAIDER Reboot
Jason Bourne star Alicia Vikander talks here about taking on the role of Lara Croft in 2018's Tomb Raider reboot, promising an origin story which will help this instalment stand out from the last two.
We've known for a while now that the upcoming Tomb Raider movie is inspired by Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' 2013 video game reboot, but in a new interview with IGN to promote the release of Jason Bourne, star Alicia Vikander shed some light on how that's being used as a basis to differentiate the reboot from the two relatively popular movies which starred Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft.
"The difference is that you clearly see from the previous games and what they were aiming on making as a difference, with making it a bit more of an origin story. That is something I think that we’re trying to have as our main thing, to show the journey of becoming what we know her as: Lara Croft." The actress wouldn't go into further detail, but did emphasise her excitement.
"For me, Tomb Raider is about the excitement of working on a project with a female character that I again in one way have a relationship with," she added. "I played the game when I was a kid. I was running around in that house and jumping in the pool and doing all the action -- and then of course Angelina Jolie made her into an icon with her films. That was also something that I thought of when I first heard that they were going to make a Tomb Raider film, and then I found out that they were going to make a film based on the rebooted game from 2013. I think what we’re now going to do is we’re aiming to do something very fresh and something new that can stand on its own two legs."
It's going to be very interesting seeing how Tomb Raider comes together over the next couple of years, especially as video game adaptations still struggle to find an audience and score positive reviews. Assassin's Creed may very well change that this December of course, but this reboot is set to hit the big screen on March 16th, 2018. Are you excited? As always, share your thoughts in the comments.
