The long-delayed Tomb Raider sequel won't be happening, and that's down to MGM being too slow to get cameras rolling before losing the rights to the franchise. The last we heard, a bidding war had ensued between multiple studios to reboot the franchise, meaning Alicia Vikander's time as Lara Croft has wrapped up after just one movie.
Angelina Jolie at least lasted two, and a sneak peek at an action sequence planned for the sequel seemingly harkens back to her memorable 2001 debut as the iconic video game character.
Artist Jake Lunt Davies has taken to Twitter (via ActioNewz.com) to share storyboards depicting operatives infiltrating Croft Manor during a stormy evening. You may remember a similar sequence playing out in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, so we're assuming this was either a strange coincidence or a deliberate throwback to the character's first live-action appearance.
In the closing moments of 2018's Tomb Raider, we learned that a clandestine organisation called Trinity was targeting the adventurer, so we're assuming that's who this lot was working for.
It was also during that movie's conclusion that Lara purchased her iconic duel pistols and also had her hair braided in the same way as Jolie's iteration of the character. While not a prequel to those previous movies, we do wonder if the plan was to surprise fans by linking the franchises together somehow seeing as the 2018 effort was very much an origin story.
Whatever the case may be, we're now getting a new take on the character which promises to be very interesting. It might be best to forego the origin story at this point, picking up with a Lara who is already a full-fledged explorer (which would obviously be more in line with the original video games).
