Warner Bros. and MGM have announced today that their Tomb Raider reboot will be released on March 16th, 2018. The studios are co-producing the movie after acquiring the rights to the property from GK Films (who previously bought them from Square Enix in 2011). Oscar winning actress Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) signed up to take on the role of Lara Croft back in April.
What's interesting about this date is that's it's the same day that The Flash was expected to reach the big screen; that's clearly changed now, but what that means for the Scarlet Speedster is unclear.
Regardless, having sold over 45 million copies worldwide, Tomb Raider is one of the biggest video game franchises in history, so Warner Bros. is no doubt hoping they have a hit on their hands here. The previous movies (which starred Angelina Jolie as Lara) grossed over $432 million worldwide, not a bad sum, but one which pales in comparisons to how well most blockbusters perform these days.
Now that a release date has been confirmed, expect more details on Tomb Raider to follow soon.
