Vice-President of Gaming at Microsoft Phil Spencer has recently made a rather controversial comment in regards to the Xbox Series X, although this actually gives us a broader idea of Microsoft's strategy moving forward — which may just be what gives this next-gen console an edge over the competition.
Spencer was a guest on Gary Whitta's Animal Talking show on YouTube — which, by the way, is a virtual talk show that actually takes place in Animal Crossing: New Horizons — where he talked about the unfortunate Halo Infinite delay, as well as his own video gaming journey. Shout outs to the people over at DualShockers for pointing us in the right direction.
As revealed on this interview, and after being asked about his opinion on the next generation of consoles as a whole, Phil Spencer reveals that they want players to be able to play on more than just one console.
In other words, Spencer reveals that Microsoft wants players not to be limited by a specific console like the Xbox Series X; giving them more options while still being a "member of Xbox" and that said "membership in Xbox isn't about one device, it can be multiple devices."
"It is a fundamental difference than the traditional 'console wars' people talk about. How many consoles do I sell versus how many consoles does another company sell. That's not our approach. If that was our approach we wouldn't put our games on PC. We wouldn't put our games on Xbox One, we wouldn't do xCloud and allow people to play games on their phones," Spencer explained.
Spencer makes sure to address the fact tht he isn't disparaging other companies' approach, or their strategy. This is simply not Microsoft and the Xbox brand's approach going into this next generation of consoles, as they want to give players the choice where to play their favourite games without tying them to one console; in this case the Xbox Series X.
The full interview with Phil Spencer is quite lengthy, but he does reveal some interesting details about pretty much anything related to Microsoft and Xbox, so I'd still recommend giving it a watch in its entirety. Regardless, the video below will take you right to the moment in which he talks about the Xbox Series X and their strategy for this new generation of consoles.
Give it a watch:
