One of the most popular video game series of all time is heading to Netflix.
According to THR, the streaming giant has secured a deal to develop a live-action feature and an adult animated series based on Xbox third-person shooter, Gears of War. The original game was released on November 7, 2006, so this announcement comes on the 16th anniversary of the franchise.
Apparently, the movie and animated show are just the tip of the iceberg, and should they be successful, Netflix has plans for more Gears of War projects (though no details on what they might be were shared).
No filmmakers or producers are attached at this time.
There have been several attempts to adapt Gears of War for the big screen over the years, but none of them ever got off the ground. Universal Pictures hired Shane Salerno to pen a script back in 2017, but updates have been practically nonexistent since, and the project has evidently fallen by the wayside.
The original Gears trilogy focused on the conflict between humanity and a subterranean reptilian race known as the Locust Horde on the world of Sera. The games follow protagonist Marcus Fenix, a soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments tasked to lead a last-ditch effort to destroy the Locust Horde and save humanity.
