Niantic's mobile hit Pokemon Go was under some criticism in its early days as many people were convinced that the obsession and the craze surrounding the phenomenon would be only temporary. While that may seem like the case to someone who doesn't play, it is far from true.
In fact, last month alone, in October, Pokemon Go managed to bring in an impressive $73 million dollars. That shows a 67% increase in profits over what was made in October of 2017. That means that even though no one is required to pay to play the game, a combined $73 million was earned from trainers spending money either on items for playing or for avatar customizable accessories in the in-game shop.
The numbers from last month allowed Pokemon Go to become the eighth highest earning mobile app in the world as well as the seventh in mobile games, taking place ahead of the mobile version of Fortnite: Battle Royale, a highly popular game.
Pokemon Go is truly a game for players of all ages, shapes, and sizes and the numbers reflect that. The countries that spent the most in-game were the United States and Japan, with Japanese players spending slightly more than those in America.
The recent boost is possible because of the addition of Generation IV Pokemon which originally debuted in Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl, or because Niantic has been pushing with several events lately (Gengar Raid, Halloween, Community Day), or maybe it is simply due to the fact that Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee! and Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu! will be with us in a week.
