Pokémon Go launched the PVP feature initially exclusively for Trainers of level 40 as a nice treat, and hours later to the remaining players that are of level 10 and over now have the chance to play too. Since Niantic has no plans of allowing Trainers of any lower levels to partake.
To battle with a fellow Trainer you first must be in the same location as the Trainer you are trying to battle. Access the battle options through your friends list and also by scanning other players QR codes.
The good news is that you can play long distance with the people you send gifts to most - Ultra Friends or Best Friends. There are also AI controlled Team Leaders that players can battle with if no one else is around.
In-game rewards can be earned by battling other human Trainers. This includes the new item the Sinnoh Stone, which is needed to evolve some
Pokémon in Generation 4. These rewards are earnable in this manner up to three times a day so get out there and battle your friends, or make new friends by battling!
