A month ago, Sonic the Hedgehog arrived on digital way earlier than anticipated — find out more on that here. The video game movie is the highest-grossing of all time but Paramount Pictures is yet to officially announce a sequel — probably on account of the whole coronavirus pandemic that's still ongoing at the time of writing.
Nonetheless, director Jeff Fowler continues to show enthusiasm for the continued expansion of "the Sonic cinematic universe." There are certainly implications that we could go into what with him referring to the movie as that — such as spinoffs possibly being considered.
"There's so many more great characters to bring in and just more stories to tell," Fowler told USA Today (via Toonado). "(But) nothing would bring me more happiness than getting another shot with these characters and to tell more stories. We'd love to do more with the Sonic cinematic universe."
Fowler went on to specifically address questions of whether future instalments will feature fan-favourite characters like Knuckles and Tails — the latter particularly given that they featured in one the first instalment's post-credits scenes. The director says that they will do their utmost to include them in some which way.
"We would get that question a lot from fans, 'Is Tails in it? Is Knuckles in it?' All these fan-favourite characters," says Fowler. "We had to do that little fan Easter egg with Tails and say, 'We know you love these characters. We will absolutely get to them in future stories if we're able to.'"
At this point, we can take it as confirmation (being from the mouth of the director himself) that a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel will feature Tails at the very least. That's certainly something for fans to anticipate.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now available digitally — Blu-ray and Ultra 4K HD release set for May 19th, 2020.
