At long last,
Sonic the Hedgehog has arrived in theatres. The live-action video game movie had a unique production — having been delayed due to backlash against the titular character's initial design — but turned out all the better for it. Ben Schwartz serves as the voice of Sonic himself, Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, and Jeff Fowler directs.
Back when the backlash was at its most intense, the movie was projected to be a flop by box office experts. Following the reveal of the character's new look,
Sonic the Hedgehog was expected to earn between $20 million and $30 million. However, projections close to release believed that the video game movie could make about $50 million —
see that report here.
So, how did the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie fare? Well, it essentially blasted by those expectations and earned $57 million in the United States and Canada (via
Box Office Mojo). That's $3 million more than the opening of
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and thus;
Sonic the Hedgehog now holds the crown for best video game movie debut.
Beyond the domestic box office,
Sonic the Hedgehog made $43 million. That makes for a worldwide gross of $111 million. This means that the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie has already surpassed its budget — that being $85 million. Here's hoping it can keep up the impressive numbers.

The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
