In less than ten days,
Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in theatres. The upcoming, live-action movie is based on the popular and iconic video game franchise and character of the same name. Ben Schwartz follows in the footsteps of the likes of Roger Craig Smith and Jason Griffith by serving as the voice of the titular speedster. The cast also include Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter.
Recently, Schwartz appeared on
Jimmy Kimmel Live wherein he discussed and promoted the upcoming video game movie. The voice actor spoke about getting to serve as the official voice of
Sonic the Hedgehog. In his earnest and sincere answer, Schwartz says that he's a longtime fan of the franchise and playing the role is like a dream come true.
"It's crazy, because I played it in 1991," Schwartz began.
"I was a huge fan of the games, and then when they're making this film, and they asked if I would do it -- it's like a dream come true. 'cause now I get to be the voice [...] maybe some people watch it now, and I'll be the way that they're getting introduced to the character. It's crazy. It blows my mind."
It therefore comes as no surprise that Schwartz would be down to return to the role in the future — as he recently stated in a separate interview
that you can find out about here. You can check out the full interview in question below. The above quote comes from about the 3:55 mark.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog races into theatres on February 14th, 2020.
