Back in 2018, it was officially announced that Nintendo has teamed up with Illumination Entertainment in order to bring about an animated movie based on the long-running, popular, and iconic
Super Mario Bros. franchise. The project has been under the radar since then — until now!
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently provided an update on the status of the upcoming, animated
Super Mario Bros. movie. In a recent, official financial document —
that you can check out here — Furukawa explains that production is
"moving along smoothly," and they're expecting that it will be in theaters by 2022.
It's also mentioned that Nintendo will own the rights to the film — this means that it can be
"leveraged for business opportunities." Both Nintendo and Universal Pictures are funding the
Super Mario Bros. animated film. Furukawa says that the project is
"one of the bigger examples" of how Nintendo is providing consumers with more opportunities to interact with the IP.
Nintendo is apparently "proactively involved in" in the film's development, what with both Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri attached as producers — more on that here.
