Considering that
System Shock 3 has been officially announced a good while ago (back in 2016, to be exact), we still know next to nothing about that reimagining on the
System Shock series, the older brother of
Deus Ex. While the techno-thriller definitely won't launch this year, the fact that it has recently lost its publisher in Starbreeze Studios doesn't bode well for the Warren Spector-directed title.
In an development update, OtherSide Entertainment (the studio behind
Underworld: Ascendant) explained the reason why Starbreeze won't publish
System Shock 3. "
We have very much enjoyed working with Starbreeze on System Shock 3. They’ve been a great partner. As developers themselves they understand the challenges of game development and that’s been refreshing," Community Manager Sam Luangkhot said. "
However, in light of Starbreeze’s current situation, we decided together that it'd be best for us to go our separate ways for now. We wish them the best of luck."
"
Starbreeze’s current situation" definitely refers to
OVERKILL's The Walking Dead's cancelation, CEO Bo Andersson Klint's resignation, and the Swedish Economic Crime Authority's raid on their offices.
According to Luangkhot,
"the game is more than halfway completed. At its core, it already feels like a System Shock game, while at the same time introducing new elements to the franchise. As the original creators of the game, we want to see this game made as much as our fans do," so
System Shock 3's release date might be finally released in the coming weeks, but it's just our speculation.
“
We parted ways with Starbreeze (amicably), which means we are in the process of lining up a new publishing partner. Happily, given the pedigree of System Shock and the progress we’ve made so far there’s already a lot of interest," Spector added. "
The team is still, as we say, ‘psyched and cranking’ – in other words, continuing as normal. I’m confident we can bring System Shock 3 to market and have it take its place as a leading title in the immersive simulation genre,”
Deus Ex Designer concluded.
Powered by Unreal Engine 4,
System Shock 3 is an indirect remake of the original. To make sure that the reboot is as true to the 1994 classic as possible, the studio has been collaborating closely with the original developers of
System Shock and its 1999 sequel. Be sure to check out the game down below:
After two decades, Nightdive Studios is rebooting and re-imagining the original System Shock. We will keep the new game true to the classic experience, keeping all the things you loved while giving today's gamers the modern look and feel expected from a great game.
System Shock 3 is set to release in 2020.
