There is no secret that Ubisoft has tried to do something different with their latest entry in the
Assassin's Creed series:
Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
From the get-go,
Assassin's Creed Odyssey has been introducing more, and more role-playing elements to the series, while still keeping the core elements that made
Assassin's Creed a household name.
Some fans of the series may not agree with the changes made to the series but there is no denying that gameplay-wise the game looks definitely very polished, especially with all the focus on giving the player choices that may change how the story unfolds..
In a recent interview with DualShockers, Ubisoft Asia General Manager Steve Miller revealed that the Assassin's Creed series has a core following in Japan, as well as it being one of the most successful Western series—hinting at the possibility of
Assassin's Creed Odyssey becoming the best title in the series yet.
"
Assassin’s Creed has a core following in Japan, and it is one of the most successful Western series in Japan. There are many fans who like the historical settings, the fashion, detail in the buildings, and also they appreciate the full localization that goes into the Japanese version", explained Miller by adding that
Assassin's Creed Odyssey featuring a Spartan heroine(Kassandra) definitely appeals to the Japanese core fanbase.
"
At the same time, Odyssey is more RPG-like than any previous Assassin’s Creed, so we think the appeal of this game will reach beyond the core fans and will be very interesting for RPG fans, which we know there are many of in Japan".
Miller definitely has a point given that Japanese audiences definitely have a soft spot for RPGs like the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the more recent Monster Hunter series—all of which developed by Japanese companies like Square Enix and Capcom.
"Together with the ever-increasing installed base of the various consoles, we think Odyssey has a good chance of being the most successful Assassin’s Creed title ever in Japan".
Assassin's Creed Odyssey embracing the RPG genre is anything but a bad thing, since some of the hardcore fans have even admitted that the series was getting stale and repetitive—and all of this new focus on giving player choices definitely helps keeps things interesting in a series that has been around as long as
Assassin's Creed has.
