The Assassin's Creed movie was a critical and commercial flop, but that doesn't mean Ubisoft is giving up on the property. Back in March, we learned that a TV series is in the works but no further information was revealed at the time. Well, while we still don't know for sure what form it will take, it's been revealed today that Adi Shankar will serve as showrunner.
Shankar is best known for fan-films like Dirty Laundry and Power/Rangers, but he's currently serving as showrunner for Netflix's Castlevania, so it makes sense that Ubisoft is turning to him for help.
"I'm happy to let you guys know that I've selected my next project. I played the first edition of Assassin's Creed the year I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream. At that moment I knew absolutely no one in the industry and could never have imagined that one day Ubisoft would ask me to take the world of Assassin's Creed and create an original anime story set in it as a series. If anyone tells you not to follow your passion in life they are wrong."
This Assassin's Creed TV series could be animated or live-action and may be on a regular network or online streaming service of some sort. It's hard to say for sure as networks may be reluctant to go near the property after the way the movie disappointed (not to mention the reputation video game adaptations have).
We'll just have to wait and see, but with a showrunner now in place who is clearly a fan of the property, there may be hope yet for fans of Assassin's Creed.
