We haven't seen a proper multiplayer mode in the Assassin's Creed game series since Unity back in 2014 and even then, that was just a four player co-op mode. The classic Assassin's Creed multiplayer was one of stealth combat. Multiple players would be placed within a map together and tasked with eliminating specific targets, the targets being other players, without being spotted or taken out yourself.
With its subsequent titles of Syndicate, Origins, and the upcoming Odyssey, the series has taken a more singleplayer story approach. Though fans of the franchise seem content with the current state of the series, they wouldn't be opposed to seeing the good ol' multiplayer make a comeback.
The subject of multiplayer recently came up in an interview between Ubisoft chief creative officer Serge Hascoet and Game Informer. Hascoet revealed that Ubisoft are looking into seeing the mode return: “We have many technologies, so it's case by case, but Assassin’s Creed has no multiplayer mode, and that is very important for the social aspect of gaming, so we are looking for that."
He didn't elaborate further, so whether he's talking about co-operative multiplayer, online versus, both, or a new thing entirely, is up for speculation. Which would you like to see return in a future instalment of the Assassin's Creed series?
Assassin's Creed Odyssey releases on October 5th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
