Agony is a first-person survival developed at Madmind Studio, a relatively small team of only 9 talented programmers who previously worked on The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Tom Clancy's The Division, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, and Alien Rage. Despite the fascinating promise, Agony was critically panned with a truly terrible 45% on Metacritic and it looks like that's just the beginning of the studio's problems.
Madmind released today a Kickstarter note announcing that the "company is currently struggling with financial problems." It's unclear what it means, but it's not hard to guess that Agony's sales haven't managed to beat the studio's forecasting. The current problems also suggest that Agony Unrated, a separate title produced and published by Madmind Studio and without the involvement of any publishers with some additional content and changes suggested by the community has been scrapped.
"Due to technical and legal reasons, Madmind must cancel the development of Agony Unrated," the studio announced. Agony will still receive patches and support, and PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC will get another patch this week introducing many fixes and a highly refined lighting system. It's a shame the final product came to what it was, but maybe Madmind will still manage to turn the tide.
Agony is a first-person survival horror game currently in development. Players will begin their journey as tormented soul within the depths of hell without any memories about his past. The special ability to control people on their path, and even possess simple minded demons, gives the player the necessary measures to survive in the extreme conditions they are in. By exploring hostile environment and interacting with the other weary souls of the hellscape, the hero will soon understand that there is only one way to escape from Hell, and it will require a meeting of the mystical Red Goddess.
