With NetherRealm winding down support for MK1, it increasingly seems likely that the studio's next big title will be Injustice 3.
Rumors of another Injustice installment first surfaced back in May from a credible dataminer and we now have more intel that supports the case for a third game in the evil Superman franchise.
While at Nostalgia Con in Houston, George Newbern and Phil LaMarr, who voice Superman and Green Lantern, reportedly told fans in their autograph line that brought Injustice merchandise for the pair to sign, that a new game was currently in development.
NetherRealm typically alters its development cycle between Mortal Kombat and Injustice (the studio's only two titles) and with MK1 being the most recent release, it stans to reason that the next fighting game released by Ed Boon and co. will be a new Injustice game.
Also, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently stated that he met with NetherRealm and RockSteady about more DC games, another clue that Injustice 3 is on the horizon. Gunn made that statement back in February and confirmed that both studios had games in development and that he was reviewing concept art and narrative elements.
Injustice 2 ends with two possible outcomes based on player actions, and it will be interesting to see which one becomes the canonical choice in Injustice 3.
Opting for Batman's path leads to a very dramatic power shift. He reigns over Superman, subsequently stripping him of his solar-powered abilities by imprisoning him within a Red Sun containment suit. With the Man of Steel depowered and the devastation from Brainiac and the former regime addressed, Supergirl assumes the vital role as Earth's symbol of hope, collaborating closely with Batman and his unified forces to heal the world.
If players decide to swear allegiance to Superman, prepare for a much more grim conclusion. Superman defeats Batman and sheds any heroic pretense, solidifying his reign as Earth's supreme dictator. Utilizing Brainiac's advanced tech, Superman brainwashes Batman and forces Supergirl to either fall in line or suffer the dire consequences of defiance.
Despite no official confirmation from NetherRealm, the Batman ending is widely considered the more probable canonical route.
