This week, Warner Bros. Game announced that Agent Smith from The Matrix film franchise will be joining the MultiVersus roster next week as part of Season 1: Puns & Villainy. While Season 1 of the crossover platform fighting game is grinding along, fans are already eager to see what will come next.
A new leak from reliable insider @ausilMV suggests that Beetlejuice will be one of the next new characters joining the roster, while also giving players who want to unlock him a bit of home. The leaker estimates that Beetlejuice could arrive in MultiVersus as early as Season 2 and that players will be able to unlock him through the Rifts mode "early," which is wonderful news for those unhappy with the game's tedious grind. Additionally, it's reported that players will be able to earn an exclusive Beetlejuice variant from the event track.
In the recently released mid-season 1.05 patch, developer Player First Games introduced the "Beat Rifts, Get Agent Smith Free!" event. Players who complete enough tiers in the event can begin playing as Agent Smith as early as July 8 — well before he becomes available for purchase on July 23rd. As many have discovered though, unlocking Agent Smith is proving to be a tiresome grind.
Beetlejuice has been a rumored playable character for MultiVersus for a while now. Voice lines for the character first surfaced online back in 2022, and Eric Bauza (voice actor for Bugs Bunny and Marvin) did have an Instagram post promoting MultiVersus with the Beetlejuice main theme as the sound.
Player First Games has not yet shared any official details for Season 2, but with Season 1 now at the midway point, we should start to get some details in the next couple of weeks. If the rumors are true, Beetlejuice's arrival in MultiVersus would be a fantastic tie-in promotion for the highly anticipated sequel film.
Tim Burton's Beetlejuice sequel is set to release in theaters on September 6, 2024. If the character is coming to MultiVersus, then Player First Games and Warner Bros. could start hinting at his arrival sometime in August.
Assuming he is a Season 2 character, the big question then is which version of Beetlejuice will we be getting? Will it be the one from the movies played by Michael Keaton or the version seen in the animated television series that ran from 1989 to 1991?
