During this year's Gamescom, game producer for
SoulCalibur VI, Motohiro Okubo sat down to answer some questions about the game; specifically about the timeline, the new Libra of Soul story mode, character creation, and even where he drew inspiration for the new character: Grøh.
When
SoulCalibur VI was first revealed fans were left wondering where this would be taking place in the timeline.
Back in June we got some new information about the game and it was confirmed that the game was officially set between
SoulEdge and
SoulCalibur II, thing that Okubo was asked again during this year's Gamescom—adding that
SoulCalibur VI explores the events that were triggered by the Evil Seed event' setting the game in 1583.
Okubo mentioned that the chance of having another guest character like Geralt of Rivia in the game will depend on whether players demand it or not, but he is quick to say that—if there's a chance of that ever happening—it won't be at launch, but it could end up happening in future DLC.
Speaking of new characters, Okubo says that he drew inspiration from one of his favourite director's movies when develeoping newcomer Grøh's fighting style. Players will now also have the chance to design their very own, and unique characters thanks to
SoulCalibur VI's new character creation mode. Okubo says that players will be able to pick their character's race, gender, and overall appearance—not to mention the myriad of combat styles present in the game, which are also customisable.
Going back to the timeline in the
SoulCalibur series, Okubo says tht the whole team decided it was best they focused on the battle between
Soul Edge and
SoulCalibur. This was because they considered it was one of the most important moments and they feel they were never able to tell that story deeply enough—mentioning they were not prticularly proud of how they did it in the past.
Okubo was also asked if
SoulCalibur VI was aiming more towards newcomers or seasoned players, to what he replied that the combat system in the new game is a combination of the speedy fights in
SoulCalibur II and the more polished fighting from
SoulCalibur V. According to feedback from players that were able to try out the
SoulCalibur VI demo for themselves, Okubo says that existing fans and veterans of the series agree that the game feels like
SoulCalibur. Okubo also mentions that they have added new systems like the Reverse Edge, which will help newcomers enjoy the world of
SoulCalibur and enter it smoothly.
SOULCALIBUR VI represents the latest entry in the premier weapons-based, head-to-head fighting series and continues the epic struggle of warriors searching for the legendary Soul Swords. Taking place in the 16th century, revisit the events of the original SOULCALIBUR to uncover hidden truths.
SoulCalibur VI will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on the 19th of October.
