As a franchise, Street Fighter has been around for thirty years and, in order to celebrate, Capcom are releasing the
Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. The game compiles 12 of the classic games that helped the series become what it is now.
In order to provide newcomers, and fans of the series, a history lesson, Capcom have released the first video in a retrospective series. This first video focuses on the Street Fighter series' very beginning with the obscure first-ever
Street Fighter game, and the widely-popular
Street Fighter II along with its many revisions, such as
Turbo and
Super.
While the first
Street Fighter game may be the less popular title in the series, it established most of the mechanics and characters that we see today, like Ryu's classic three signature moves(Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku).
Street Fighter was not a very intuitive game and, in fact, all of the special moves were secret and meant to be discovered by the player. The arcade cabinets used to feature pressure sensitive punch and kick buttons that would later be revised and lead to the 6-button layout the series uses nowadays.
But then,
Street Fighter II came along and redefined the fighting genre, as well as setting the standard for fighting games even to this day. It added 6 more playable characters as opposed to the first Street Fighter that only allowed players to play as Ryu or Ken, making it a total of 8. Each of these new characters had their own unique backstories that would be seen at the end of the game, which helped establish the lore for the series.
