During Tuesday's PlayStation State of Play event, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios unveiled a new trailer focused on the explosive single-player campaign for Battlefield 6. While much of the focus up until now has been on the game's multiplayer, it seems that Battlefield Studios has been cooking up quite the campaign.
Clearly inspired by today's political climate, Battlefield 6's campaign feels like a prediction of what could possibly be unfolding right before our eyes.
"The year is 2027, and the world is on the edge of chaos," EA teases. "The once unshakeable NATO alliance is crumbling, its foundations cracked by distrust and uncertainty. Financial instability, proxy wars, and political disputes have left some countries adrift in a sea of geopolitical turmoil."
Does any of that sound familiar?
The main threat isn't any particular country, but rather a massive private military corporation referred to as the Pax Armata. This formidable force is armed with deep pockets and the latest tech, and the only ones who can stop them are Dagger 13, a squad of elite US Marine raiders.
Campaign returns on a global scale. Step into Dagger 13, an elite squad of Marine Raiders, determined to stop Pax Armata in Battlefield 6’s single-player campaign. Storm the beaches of Gibraltar, take to the streets of Brooklyn for intense gunfights, perform a HALO jump into enemy territory, destruction, scale, and tight squad play shape every choice. Only in Battlefield.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, DICE narrative director Emily Grace Buck explained that both Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 were the main influences for Battlefield 6's campaign. Both games featured "fantastic campaigns with grounded, interesting characters set in what was then a contemporary setting," Buck explained.
In addition to these games, DICE also took inspiration from some modern military TV series and movies, such as Lioness and 2024's Civil War.
"Like we were saying, I think a big part of why Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 worked is they were trying to be a contemporary war story at the time they were being made, obviously they were set a few years ahead of the year that they released," Buck revealed. "But we wanted to do that here, not just to mimic what was done in Battlefield 3 before, but really embrace that spirit. So we have to look at what war really looks like today through the eyes of people who are experiencing it through stories that are coming out now, and try to bring that into the campaign so that we're respectful to people who are serving in militaries around the world and surviving through conflicts."
While multiplayer has always felt like the focal point of the Battlefield franchise, it looks like DICE has really tried to carve out a compelling narrative that will make the single-player campaign worth playing.
Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
