EA's upcoming Battlefield V will be officially set in an alternative-reality World War 2, as DICE is taking the Battlefield franchise back to where it all started sixteen years ago. The studio is bringing back the anthology format for War Stories, which will take players to different multiplayer maps, telling the story from a plenty of perspectives as Battlefield V will be "the deepest, most immersive Battlefield yet".

These War Stories will focus on both German and British sides of the conflict, apparently exploring locations that have yet to be seen in World War II games, such as Scandinavia, Rotterdam, and the deserts of Northern Africa. According to the developers, “the ‘War Stories’ are our opportunities to put the war into perspective,” as players will “witness the Second World War through the eyes of the men and women that changed the world.”

Battlefield V’s live services Tides of War won’t require to pay for a Premium Pass or map packs and this game doesn’t have a Premium Pass or anything like that, meaning that everyone gets access to new content when it releases. This "new content" will be continually added to the game, including many cosmetic options which will be the main draw to pay additional money, as there will be no pay-to-win.

That's not everything the game will offer, bringing in the Combined Arms co-op mode for 4 players with procedurally generated missions and the Grand Operations with multi-day skirmishes that carry over across various maps and modes. This last system ups the scale and stakes of 64-player battles that take inspiration from some very real historic events and encompass multiple modes and maps.

Wrapping around all three modes: War Stories, Combined Arms, and online PvP is this new concept of a Company, the bucket under which all of your in-game progression plays out. Your top-level profile can level up, just like your individual soldier classes, weapons, and vehicles. There's a lot to digest, and DICE has really only touched on the top-level ideas at this point.

Expect more details to surface at E3 2018 and in the months that follow.
