In less than two weeks, the highly anticipated and third
Borderlands game will be releasing for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. When the upcoming sequel releases, it will have been almost exactly seven years since
Borderlands 2 hit shelves.
The second instalment in the irreverent game series featured quite the extravagent antagonist: Handsome Jack. This character quickly became a fan-favourite and would sadly meet his end during the climax of
Borderlands 2. With Jack being so popular, many are expecting and have theorised that the upcoming instalment might feature his return.
In a recent interview with
Critical Hit, the director of
Borderlands 3 shot down this idea. Paul Sage revealed that the idea of Jack returning in
Borderlands 3 had once been considered but was swiftly left behind.
"We did originally consider that. We knew that fans loved Jack and we knew there’d be a big response to seeing him return but at the end of the day, we decided we needed to move on."
"I think the ending to Borderlands 2 was a pretty definitive end to Jack, at least in the mainline games, and to bring him back for another round kinda felt like it undermined everything the player did in Borderlands 2," Sage elaborated before telling fans who are anticipating the character's return to stop doing so.
"So yeah, Jack’s gone. Don’t expect him to be back."
Borderlands 3 is set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 13th, 2019.
