Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has revealed that a new Borderlands game as well as a new Brothers in Arms game are in development at the studio. Confirmation came as part of an in-depth interview piece with Pitchford from the Epic Games Store exploring the adaptation of the highly successful Borderlands franchise into a movie.
During the interview, Pitchford was specifically asked if the studio was working on a Borderlands sequel.
"Of course we are," he confirmed. "There's a moment when we're ready, and we can and will announce something because that's the moment to make a public promise. We're working on lots of Borderlands. We're working on lots of Brothers in Arms."
It shouldn't really come as too much of a surprise that a new Borderlands game is in the works. After all, it's one of Gearbox's most successful franchises and the last game in the series was 2022's Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a spin-off inspired by Borderlands 2's Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep DLC.
The last mainline game was Borderlands 3, which was released in 2019. for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were released in November 2020, many fans are undoubtedly waiting for a full-fledged game that takes full advantage of the current-gen hardware.
Brothers in Arms, meanwhile, is a franchise from Gearbox that hasn't seen a new mainline installment for consoles since 2008's Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.
Pitchford explained that Brothers in Arms is a series that holds deep meaning for him and Gearbox as it was his first "wholly original" game.
“Brothers in Arms was the first wholly original game and franchise that I created and directed," Pitchford said. "Everything else before that was an IP that other people had created before me.”
He went on to explain that the explosive success of Borderlands, unfortunately, meant that the Brothers in Arms franchise had to be cast aside because there simply were not enough resources to support both franchises at the time.
“It was painful that we had no choice but to effectively abandon our energies toward Brothers in Arms in order to successfully commit to Borderlands,” Pitchford said. “There were enough people that loved it and wanted more of it and we loved it and wanted to give more to it, but that didn’t change the fact that there are only so many hours in a day.”
In addition to new Borderlands and Brothers in Arms games, Pitchford also hinted that work is being performed on all of Gearbox's IP.
"I mean, we just launched Homeworld 3, and there’s still work going on there," he said. "And there’s Risk of Rain, and there’s Duke Nukem, and there’s more.”
We don't yet know when the new Borderlands or Brothers in Arms games will be officially unveiled, but fans can rest easy knowing that Gearbox is hard at work supporting both franchises. In the meantime, fans can check out the Borderlands movie adaptation which hits theaters tomorrow, August 9th.
