During Activision Blizzard's earnings report, the company announced that a new Call of Duty game will be releasing in 2019. This probably doesn't come as too much of a surprise as the annualized franchise has seen a new installment every year since 2003.
Activision didn't get into specifics but did offer some high-level insight on the game, which will be developed by Infinity Ward. Activision said it will appeal to veterans of the franchise and newcomers alike and that it is "rooted" in Call of Duty 's history, which suggests it will be a sequel to an existing sub-series. It is rumored that Infinity Ward's 2019 Call of Duty will be Modern Warfare 4.
Perhaps most surprisingly, this year's Call of Duty will feature some kind of campaign, a shocking announcement considering Activision ditched the traditional campaign in Treyarch's Black Ops 4 (although tutorial missions did offer some background context). In place of the campaign, Black Ops 4 offered the franchise's very first battle royale mode, Blackout.
Activision confirmed the new game will also have a "huge expansive multiplayer world," as well as "fun co-op gameplay." Given the positive reception to Blackout, it's likely we haven't seen the last of battle royale in the franchise.
While Activision does have "high expectations" for this year's Call of Duty, they tempered the statement by predicting that sales of the 2019 game will be lower than those of Black Ops 4, which was revealed to have "sold-through more units than Black Ops III, with PC units more than tripling."
Activision typically reveals the newest Call of Duty in May, so we've still got a few months to go.
