Bungie has canceled tomorrow's planned livestream for
Destiny 2's upcoming expansion
Curse of Osiris. The developer announced the change of plans in a
blog post today.
In place of livestream, which was supposed to show off some of the weapons and armor the expansion includes, Bungie will publish a blog post with some "higher priority information" about the future of the game."
"We are investing all our efforts into delivering some higher priority information about Destiny 2," community manager David 'DeeJ' Dague said.
"You’ll hear from studio leadership about their assessment of Destiny all up, they’ll talk about our goals for the game going forward, and you’ll also learn about how we’re reacting to your feedback with some game updates that will arrive in the next few weeks.
The decision to cancel the livestream comes at a time when tension is high between
Destiny's community of players and its developer Bungie. For weeks the community has posted their frustration with the game and its developer over on the
Destiny subreddit, which touch on issues like
PS4-exclusive content,
exotic emotes and a
lack of variety. Things hit a breaking point when it was recently discovered that Bungie was throttling experience in the game to artificially slow the leveling process once players were past cap; it was interpreted by the community as a way for the developer to encourage players to spend money on microtransactions.
Bungie responded swiftly over the Thanksgiving weekend, confirming the communities suspicions and
implementing a "fix." That fix came in the form of doubling the amount of XP necessary to level up and earn Bright Engrams - a move which only further angered the player base.
Point being,
Destiny 2 is not in a good place right now. Despite sound gameplay mechanics, the fundamentals behind the systems in place are broken and up until now Bungie hasn't appeared to have a remedy. Hopefully we learn more with tomorrow's post.
In addition to tomorrow's livestream, Bungie was also supposed to detail
Destiny 2's December update arriving alongside
Curse of Osiris. Game director Luke Smith and project lead Mark Noseworthy were supposed to appear and answer questions while addressing community feedback. It's unclear if that'll still happen or if it'll just be included in the post.
