Yesterday, we witnessed what might be one of the biggest video-gaming stories of the year as
Destiny maker Bungie and Activision are bringing their partnership to a close. What's arguably the most important part of that unexpected announcement was the fact that Bungie will acquire publishing rights to the MMOFPS series from the
Call of Duty owner and will be self-publishing future games.
Research firm Cowen & Company shared their thoughts on the news in a note to investors earlier today, predicting that Bungie will release
Destiny 3 in 2020. It would definitely make sense, as the first
Destiny launched in 2014, with
Destiny 2 coming in 2017, and many paid DLC released in-between. While
Destiny and
Destiny 2 might have been commercially successful on a unit basis, the games did not achieve the kind of recurring revenue stream that Activision wanted, Cowen & Company said.
According to a recent leak,
Destiny 3 is already being developed at Bungie. The leak comes from a prominent Reddit leaker who revealed many information about
Forsaken in the past. AnonTheNine's sources indicated that the works on
Destiny 3 begun around October and Art Director for
Destiny Christopher Barrett and
Destiny 2 Director Luke Smith are involved in the project. Sadly, the Reddit user didn't reveal
D3’s target release date or whether or not it will launch for current-gen consoles.
