Hollywood has a long history of producing the video-games adaptations, but most (if not all) of them failed to meet the audience and critics' expectations. Even last year, Activision-Blizzard tried to do Warcraft justice and the only thing that stopped Duncan Jones' movie from being a complete box office disaster was a strong support from China. Ubisoft Motion Pictures didn't have this privilege, as Assassin's Creed ended its run with roughly $240 million.
This time Activision will work on Overwatch, the online Blizzard's juggernaut. Speaking to MCV, the president and CEO of the company, Tim Kilpin said that an animated Overwatch movie is a real possibility after releasing the big screen adaptation of Call of Duty. The CGI short videos spotlighting the online game's characters were quite popular, so maybe this time the idea would actually pay off.
The publisher also plans to finally make moves in the television division: "We're a platform and a portfolio, these franchises exist across multiple platforms, so it's not just the game as a driver, but it's linear content [movies and TV] as a way to expand the audience and expand the opportunity and then esports [too], because pull all that together and you're talking about franchises that are frankly like no other", Kilpin concluded.
