In a very unexpected announcement, Epic Games has announced that
Fortnite Battle Royale, the 100-player fight-til-your-death game, will be coming to mobile devices.
"Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates," Epic assured.
What's more, Epic has apparently partnered with Sony to allow
Fortnite Battle Royale to support Cross Play and Cross Progression between PS4, PC, Mac, and mobile. This will allow players to squad up with friends and play together, regardless of device - a strange, but welcomed decision on Sony's part considering how guarded they've been when it comes to cross play with other devices not within the PlayStation brand.
"We believe this is the future of games. The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want," Epic said.
Starting on Monday, March 12 you can
sign-up for the Invite Event on iOS, with support for Android devices coming
"in the next few months." Email invites will start rolling out shortly afterward. If you are invited, you will receive an email with a link to download the game from the App Store. If you don't get an invite in this initial wave, Epic will be adding more players to the mobile version of the game regularly over the next couple of months. Additionally, players who do receive an invite will also get friend invite codes to share with others. To participate in the
Fortnite event on iOS, you will need internet connection and iOS on at least iPhone 6S/SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017 devices.
Obviously this is fantastic news, but one has to wonder how exactly the control scheme and gameplay mechanics of
Fortnite will translate over to mobile devices without any unfair competitive advantages on any platform.
