According to The NPD Group's most recent statistics, the Dead Space 2023 remake was amongst the best-selling new video game in the United States in January. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the best-selling game in the US for the fourth consecutive month, dethroned the well-received remake of the 2008 survival horror game.

Three additional new games, Fire Emblem Engage (#5), Forspoken (#7), and One Piece Odyssey (#9), joined Dead Space in the top 20 best-sellers.

Despite the fact that four new games made the top 10, Mat Piscatella of NPD reported a 5% decrease in year-over-year consumer expenditure in the United States on video game software, hardware, and accessories. He reported on Twitter that "video game hardware spending was steady, but content (-5%) and accessory (-14%) spending declined." Sales are down year over year for the first time since last September as a result of the decline from $4.5 billion to $4.3 billion.

However, not everything was offline. The PS5 edition of the acclaimed survival horror by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us: Part 1, witnessed a rise in the rankings. It moved up from #36 to #11 in the sales rankings, helped in part by the success of the brand-new HBO series.

The Callisto Protocol had a significantly worse start to life than Dead Space, which made its premiere at #2. Some may have anticipated that The Callisto Protocol, which was directed by Glenn Schofield, a co-creator of the original game Dead Space, would have made a big sensation. Nevertheless, despite its pedigree, it debuted in the NPD sales charts for December 2022 at an unimpressive #17.

The Callisto Protocol has completely vanished from the top 20 sales chart after just one month. Time will tell if Dead Space has the staying strength to continue climbing the charts into the following month, but with a much better critical reception and less AAA competition in February, its chances are higher.

The complete rankings for the top 20 best-selling premium games in the US in January 2023 are as follows:

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  2. Dead Space (2023)
  3. Madden NFL 23
  4. FIFA 23

  15. Minecraft
  16. Need for Speed: Unbound

Dead Space is a science fiction survival horror video game series developed by Visceral Games. The first game in the series, Dead Space, was released in 2008. The game follows the story of Isaac Clarke, an engineer who is sent to the mining spaceship USG Ishimura to investigate a strange distress signal. Once he arrives, he finds the ship overrun by grotesque creatures called Necromorphs, and he must fight his way through them to uncover the truth behind the outbreak and find a way to escape the ship alive. Along the way, Isaac uncovers a sinister plot by the religious cult known as the Unitologists, and he must stop them from unleashing a deadly force that could destroy humanity. The game features intense action, puzzle-solving, and a unique take on the survival horror genre that has won it a dedicated following.
