After years of speculation, delays, and memes, Team Cherry's long-awaited sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is officially set to release during Holiday 2025. Microsoft confirmed the news during its Xbox Games Showcase, revealing that the game will launch alongside the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handheld gaming devices. Fans of the game can catch a short few second glimpse at some gameplay of Silksong on the new ROG Xbox Ally in the trailer down below:
The announcement was made by Microsoft’s Sarah Bond, who noted that Silksong will be playable on day one of the ROG Ally’s release. The game was featured prominently in a sizzle trailer for the Xbox x Asus collaboration, highlighting the handheld’s compatibility with major Game Pass titles.
Originally announced all the way back in February 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong was first conceived as a DLC expansion for 2017’s Hollow Knight. The scope of the project eventually grew so significantly that it became a full standalone sequel. Players will once again journey into a richly animated insectoid underworld, this time through the eyes of Hornet an agile, needle-wielding warrior and one of the original game's most memorable characters.
Set in a brand-new kingdom "haunted by silk and song," Silksong promises a fresh narrative, new biomes, and over 150 new enemy types. Unlike the Knight’s methodical style from the first game, Hornet offers a faster, acrobatic combat style, with more vertical mobility and dance-like movement.
Platform Availability:
Hollow Knight: Silksong will release on:
- Nintendo Switch
- PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Windows PC
- Xbox Game Pass (Day One Access)
The game’s development has been closely followed and memed by fans since its reveal. After a gameplay trailer debuted at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase in June 2022, developers promised a release within the next 12 months. However, in May 2023, Team Cherry’s Matthew Griffin announced the project had been delayed indefinitely, citing a need for more development time.
Now, with a confirmed release window and a strong marketing push alongside Xbox’s new hardware, Silksong finally appears ready to make its long-awaited debut. Whether you’re a longtime bug fan or new to the Metroidvania genre, this holiday season looks like the perfect time to return to Hallownest or explore the world beyond it.
