There's no denying that
Anthem is not what the majority of BioWare fans had expected when the online looter shooter was officially announced at EA PLAY 2017. While BioWare is best-known for their beautiful, rich worlds populated with colorful characters that actually have something to say and do,
Anthem may feel like a shallow, rushed, and sadly repetitive project that doesn't live to its premise.
According to Kotaku's Jason Schreier, you should stop putting the blame only on EA for the game's current state, as the controversial publisher is reportedly giving "
its studios a lot of autonomy."
In Schreier’s opinion, those who say that it was EA who forced BioWare to make this clone of
Destiny are wrong. The writer revealed on Twitter that "
EA isn't interested in putting big money into video games unless they can have a revenue tail," so the basic of idea of
Anthem had to be good enough to persuade the executives to not only budget the title, but also make it their biggest release of the year.
While it's impossible to say if Schreier’s words hold true, the fact that many players are seriously concerned about BioWare's future after
Anthem's apparent underperformance should tell you all you need to know about EA's approach to their in-house studios that don’t "deliver;" just ask Pandemic Studios, Black Box Games, Maxis, Bullfrog Productions, Westwood Studios, or Visceral Games.
