CHRONO TRIGGER Remake Report Debunked After Footage Confirms Translation Was Wrong

It seems that rumors of a Chrono Trigger remake from Square Enix were a bit premature as footage confirms Yuji Horri made no mention of a remake at a recent Comicon event.

Reports of the Chrono Trigger remake have been debunked. Earlier this week, reports stemming from Naples Comicon claimed that Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii had mentioned a remake during a panel discussion.

Horii served as the main writer behind the original Chrono Trigger, which was released in 1995, so if anyone had knowledge of a remake, it would likely be him. Unfortunately, these reports have been proven false.

Gematsu was able to obtain footage of the panel from Naples, confirming that Horri never actually said anything about a remake of Chrono Trigger. A recording of the panel was shared online with Gematsu's post:

Chrono Trigger is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The acclaimed JRPG was first released in Japan on March 11, 1995, before arriving in North America on August 11th that same year.

Although Square Enix has acknowledged the game's anniversary and even hinted at related projects, there has been no official announcement of a remake despite continued interest from fans.

Square Enix released the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake back in November 2024, sparking hope that they would do the same for Chrono Trigger. When reports of Horii's supposed comments hit the internet, they were met with incredible excitement from gamers. Alas, it seems the wait will continue.

Chrono Trigger is a classic JRPG, originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game featured turn-based combat and a party-based system, along with exploration and puzzle-solving mechanics. The game also offered multiple endings depending on the choices players made throughout the story and when they defeated the final boss.

A chance encounter amid the festivities of Guardia's Millennial Fair in Leene Square introduces our young hero, Crono, to a girl by the name of Marle. Deciding to explore the fair together, the two soon find themselves at an exhibition of the Telepod, the latest invention by Crono's longtime friend Lucca. Marle, fearless and brimming with curiosity, volunteers to assist in a demonstration. An unanticipated malfunction, however, sends her hurtling through a rift in the dimensions. Taking hold of the girl's pendant, Crono bravely follows in pursuit. But the world into which he emerges is the one of four centuries before. Journey to the forgotten past, the distant future, and even to the very End of Time. The epic quest to save a planet's future makes history once again.

Chrono Trigger was praised for its engaging story and innovative gameplay mechanics. Revolutionary for its time, Chrono Trigger has served as an influence for many of today's modern RPGs.

While we may have to wait for a proper remake, gamers can still enjoy the timeless RPG classic. A high-resolution version of Chrono Trigger is available on PC (released in 2018). There's also a version available on the Nintendo DS for those who still own Nintendo's older handheld system.
