A new loot filter category has players suspicious. Players noticed Diablo IV listing "Hand Crossbow" as a weapon type even though no class in the game can use one. That string has been sitting in the client since at least May. With BlizzCon two weeks away, the obvious leap of what this means is a Demon Hunter class announcement.
In Diablo III, hand crossbows were a Demon Hunter weapon. The class dual-wielded those little one-handers, stacked Hatred, dropped sentries, and ran the most recognizable ranged fantasy in the series. Blizzard’s own old comments said no other class was planned to use them. When that label shows up in Diablo IV with nobody to equip it, people fill in the class that owned it last time.
However this could be nothing special, as games leave unused item types in data all the time. It could be a future Rogue weapon, a single Unique that never shipped, a leftover from an internal test, or a real class that is not ready to talk. Treat those as four different sentences until Blizzard picks one.
The timing so close to BlizzCon is why the theory is loud instead of dead. BlizzCon is September 12 and 13 in Anaheim. Season 15’s PTR was left incomplete on purpose, with a "BlizzCon awaits" note instead of a full patch preview. Season 15 is also stuffed with Legacy Uniques pulled out of older Diablo games: Leoric’s Crown, Nemesis Bracers, Stone of Jordan, Squirt’s Necklace-era pieces, Arioc’s Needle, Henri’s Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace, Messerschmidt’s Reaver. That list is a nostalgia buffet. Demon Hunter is the class a lot of Diablo III players still miss, so the buffet gets read as a setup.
The Witcher crossover does not help the case as much as some posts want it to. Blizzard and CD Projekt Red already said more of that collab lands at BlizzCon, including a Geralt-inspired cosmetic for people who buy The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past on Battle.net. That is a skin partnership. It is not a class reveal. Putting both on the same stage does not make them the same announcement.
The harder problem with adding a Demon Hunter class is Rogue. When Diablo IV launched, Blizzard said Rogue would feel familiar to Assassin and Demon Hunter players: bows, crossbows, traps, shadow tools, high mobility, Dexterity. The community has spent seasons building Heartseeker and "God DH" style Rogues that copy the old sentry-and-strafe loop as closely as the current kit allows. If Demon Hunter arrives as dual hand crossbows plus turrets plus Hatred, it has to play different enough that Rogue does not look like the beta version of the same class. If it does not, you have two Dexterity hunters splitting the same loot table.
Blizzard also just added Warlock with Lord of Hatred in April. New classes are not an endangered species in this game. That cuts both ways. The studio is clearly willing to grow the roster. It is also less desperate to drop Demon Hunter tomorrow to keep Season 16 alive.
Personally, I want a Demon Hunter class in Diablo IV, I have been waiting for it since day one. The dual hand crossbow silhouette is still the best ranged look the series has. Sentries would give the game a turret fantasy Rogue never fully owned. I also do not want another two weeks of "it’s so over" posts built on a filter category and a nostalgia unique list. If Blizzard walks on stage and shows Hatred, discipline, and two little crossbows, this rumor ages into a good catch. If the BlizzCon Diablo slot is Season 15, a Witcher skin, and a Midnight-era mount bundle, the Hand Crossbow tag might just sit as a filter until 2027 without meaning anything.
Until someone from the Diablo team says the word, this is a theory with one interesting string and a convenient calendar. Play the class you have. Watch the keynote. Do not vendor your Rogue gear on a loot-filter leak if you like to play on eternal servers.
Would Demon Hunter still be worth adding if it has to share the fantasy with Rogue, or do you only want it if the kit is fully its own? Let us know in the comments.
