Diablo V has reached its first public production milestone. Neil David Carter, the cinematic director for the Diablo series at Blizzard Entertainment, posted a photo on X earlier this week (October 14th) from the game's first shoot. The image shows an empty motion capture stage, and the caption simply reads "First shoot #Diablo5." Blizzard officially announced Diablo V at BlizzCon last month, and the game is coming in Spring 2029.

What The First Shoot Means For Diablo V

Carter did not share any footage, cast names, or details about which scene was being captured, so the post is only a small look behind the curtain. It does confirm that cinematic work on the game has started. Motion capture is how Blizzard's cinematic team records the performances behind its cutscenes and trailers, and the Diablo series has always leaned hard on that kind of presentation to sell its demons, heroes, and story beats.

The timing also lines up with how early the game is. Blizzard has said that Diablo V is still early in development, and a 2029 release leaves plenty of room for the cinematics to be filmed, animated, and polished over the next few years. Blizzard put the work of its cinematic team front and center at BlizzCon as well, with a panel called "The Art of Darkness" that took fans behind the scenes of the cinematics for Diablo IV.

What Blizzard Has Revealed So Far

Blizzard revealed Diablo V during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12th, where it showed a teaser and confirmed the Spring 2029 window. The story starts from a dark premise. The heroes of the past have failed, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won. He now rules from the throne of Westmarch and uses Sanctuary's people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict, with the world serving as a stepping stone for his invasion of the Heavens.

Check out the Diablo V teaser below:

Players take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch, who is on the run through the charred remains of a kingdom that has been turned into an outpost of Hell. The Heir has a mysterious connection to Diablo that makes them both a threat to him and vulnerable to his influence. Some survivors have bowed to Diablo or joined his cults, while a few have been corrupted into Dread Commanders. Since towns are no longer safe, players will build a caravan of allies who act as vendors and companions on the road. Two of those companions are a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin.

The world itself keeps changing as well. Blizzard described a procedural landscape where terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when you return to an area, reflecting Diablo actively reshaping Sanctuary through terror.

Classes And Loot

The first three classes are the Demon Hunter, who returns with twin crossbows, the Monk, who fights with fists and holy power, and the all-new Plague Knight, who spreads disease and pestilence across the battlefield before consuming it for power. Blizzard has said these are only the first classes it plans to reveal, with more details on their combat, progression, and build possibilities still to come. The Demon Hunter and the Monk both made their debut as playable classes in Diablo III back in 2012.

Itemization is taking a lot of inspiration from Diablo II. The team is experimenting with stat requirements on gear, larger items will take up more inventory slots again, and gear-based sets are returning. Crafting will build on the approach from Diablo IV's Lord of Hatred expansion and add Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords.

The Road To 2029

Blizzard has promised that this is only the start of the conversation. Starting in 2027, the team plans to share regular updates on its progress, the ideas guiding development, and the features taking shape. Carter's post arrived well ahead of that schedule, so fans got an early peek at development a little sooner than expected.

There is plenty of other Diablo on the way in the meantime. Blizzard and Netflix are developing an animated series set in the world of Diablo, the Amazon class is coming to Diablo IV in the first half of 2027, and Diablo IV is now on Nintendo Switch 2. Blizzard also said that more than 130 million players have entered Sanctuary across the franchise as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Are you more excited to see what Blizzard's cinematic team does with a Sanctuary where Diablo has already won, or are you waiting for the first real look at Diablo V gameplay?
